Magic Realism

Maybe I should entitle this post "What Magic Realism Means to Me".  To me magic realism is magic that could really happen or does really happen in our every day lives.

I was doing research on the world's smallest fruit.  Duckweed/Wolffia Globosa 5,000 of these little fruit fill a thimble.  Well, maybe 5,001.. or 2.  Sounds like shades of Harry Potter to me.  Wasn't that something they needed in a potion?

I have found stories of herbs that will let you fly, become invisible, and many other things.  I do not necessarily believe all of these.  I do know there are seeds that will poison you.  Seeds that make you feel better.  Vitamin C, etc.

So what I am looking for in my story is magic that I can relate to.  It is not easy for me to relate to being invisible.  I can relate to being camouflaged.  So I write about my pigmentation changing colors and blending in with my environment.  To a human that might seem I am becoming invisible.  A human might believe that I (a Little Person in my story) could be practicing magic.

Using the Ley Lines for the internet, using earth batteries for lights, channeling energy through an amulet all might seem like far fetched magic.  Where what it really is is technology.

There really are dragons.  Small lizards that greatly resemble dragons.  Some have webbing between their front and back legs that let's them glide.  The same way a flying squirrel glides.  Some "dragons" breath a green, poisonous gas that will kill you.  I have never heard of a fire breathing dragon.  That is not to say in the past or somewhere deep in the earth one does not exist.

I have found a story of a network of tunnels under a college in South Carolina.  Eighteen inches high made of bricks with flat sides and floor with a domed roof.

The American Indians tell tales of The Little People that were here long before they came to America.  Almost all native American tribes tell stories of Little People.

These are the things I use to make up my story.  My people do not walk through portals, because they exist among us every day.

They exist under ground in a vast labyrinth.   Maybe...
